PMS and menstrual cramps: what solutions?

Menstrual cramps are lower abdominal pains and sometimes backaches, varying in intensity, experienced by the majority of women at least once in their lives… and unfortunately often much more frequently!

Most of the time, menstrual pains occur right at the beginning of periods, either on the first day or the day before, and last for 1 to 3 days. In some cases, these cramps can start up to 1 week before. This is referred to as Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), which can also include other symptoms such as migraines or headaches, mood swings (irritability, depression…), fatigue, bloating, sleep disturbances… Occasionally, contractions can be felt during ovulation.

These symptoms vary from woman to woman, as does their intensity and duration, and each menstrual cycle can also be different.

Where do menstrual cramps from PMS come from?

Let’s quickly review our science lessons: Lower abdominal cramps before and/or during menstruation are related to the contraction of the uterus, allowing the expulsion of the endometrium. This contraction is triggered by molecules called prostaglandins.

When these pains are directly linked to the menstrual cycle, it’s referred to as primary dysmenorrhea. When they result from more serious conditions or disorders such as endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), it’s referred to as secondary dysmenorrhea.

How to relieve symptoms of PMS?

While the desire may be lacking during pain, physical activity is a good way to relieve painful menstruation. It promotes blood circulation and allows better oxygenation of pelvic muscles. These activities can be gentle, such as yoga or walking.

Taking pain-relieving medication is also an option, but there may be unwanted side effects. It’s better to prefer natural solutions whenever possible.

If your menstrual pain is not relieved by gentle solutions like the ones we suggest below, and if it hinders your daily life, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional (doctor, gynecologist…).

For example, your contraceptive method could be reviewed (or put in place): changing birth control pills, or using a different type of intrauterine device (copper/hormonal). Hormonal fluctuations could be the cause of PMS, and changing contraceptives can work for some women.

Heat: a grandmother’s remedy with scientifically proven effectiveness!

Several studies and clinical trials (1)(2) have demonstrated the beneficial effects of heat therapy in relieving primary dysmenorrhea.

One study (2) compared pain severity at a fixed time in two groups. The first group used heating patches, while the second group received ibuprofen. The results show that the heating patch has effects comparable to ibuprofen in relieving menstrual cramps.

Heat indeed penetrates through the various layers of skin to reach the uterine muscle, helping to relax it. Therefore, it serves as a natural solution for women suffering from PMS who are seeking relief from menstrual cramps.

For soothing and long-lasting heat, we recommend the Climsom menstrual pain relief heating belt. With its included battery and 3 heat levels, it will relieve your menstrual cramps and provide comfort wherever you are. Placed on the lower back, this belt for painful periods will also alleviate lower back pain.

3 good reasons to use the heated menstrual belt to relieve PMS:

1/ Immediate warmth with a large heating surface (29.5 x 11cm) to fully experience the heat and its benefits for your painful periods. Its elastic band ensures better heat application, resulting in enhanced sensation, comfort, and effectiveness.

2/ Designed to meet your needs, it is adjustable (secured with Velcro), discreet (flexible, it remains invisible under clothing unlike rigid shell models), and very easy to use (only one button). Its included external battery makes all the difference in relieving pain wherever you are (outings, work, transportation…).

3/ Safe, with an automatic shutdown after 45 minutes (so you don’t have to worry about falling asleep with it on).
