How to use an acupressure mat effectively?

Have you heard about the acupressure mat but aren’t quite sure how to use it? Are you worried about using it incorrectly? Are you looking for personalized practice tips?

Find our user guide for the acupressure mat here to enjoy the recognized benefits of this practice.

1. Create a relaxing atmosphere for your acupressure session.

Make the most of this time for yourself by creating a zen atmosphere: soothing music, dim lighting, and perhaps a few candles (but be sure to secure the candle area, as falling asleep during an acupressure session is not uncommon!). Your wellness bubble is almost ready: don’t forget to turn off your phone.

Too much on your mind? Having trouble relaxing? Take a piece of paper and a pencil, and clear your mind by writing down what’s bothering you. Now that your mind is free, your session can begin. Start by drinking a large glass of water before gently lying down on the acupressure mat.

2. What positions should I use on my acupressure mat?

Where to place the mat?

You have several options: directly on the floor, on a rug, on a couch, or on a bed. If it’s your first acupressure session, you’ll feel the contact between the mat’s spikes and your body more intensely on a hard surface. We generally recommend laying the acupressure mat on your bed.

Naked or clothed?

You can use the mat with or without clothing, but the more your body is in direct contact with the mat, the more beneficial the session will be. However, if you’re just starting out, you can wear a light T-shirt or place a thin fabric like a sarong or fouta over the mat. Many of our users adjust to direct skin contact with the spikes from the first session. Try it and listen to your body, as the goal is to relax.

Starting your acupressure session

Lie down so that the acupressure mat is positioned between your shoulder blades and your tailbone. If needed, you can use an acupressure pillow under your neck to complement the mat.

You’re now ready for your session: close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Inhaling and exhaling will help release tension and promote relaxation. Gradually, you will feel a gentle warmth that contributes to your well-being.

A slight reaction may occur after the first few sessions, such as red skin or marks from the spikes. Don’t worry: this reaction disappears quickly and is actually a sign that your session was beneficial, as it indicates that blood microcirculation has been activated.

Since acupressure mats are in direct contact with your skin, at Climsom, we prioritize materials that are gentle on your body. That’s why we use natural acupressure mats: organic cotton covers and organic coconut fiber filling, which are non-allergenic, healthy, and durable compared to synthetic foams. Beware of inexpensive acupressure mats where the foam deteriorates too quickly. If you’re looking for the best acupressure mat, make sure to check its composition and remember that the lifespan of the mat is an important factor in your final choice. Also, consider the transportation of your mat: at Climsom, each mat comes with a waterproof, durable, and eco-friendly storage bag.

3. How to Relax on an Acupressure Mat?

It may not be easy to relax during your first contact with the mat. This is normal, as it’s a new sensation for your body that needs time to adjust. Some of our users have initially experienced some discomfort. If this happens, it’s better not to continue with direct skin contact. Instead, place a thin cloth between your back and the mat to alleviate any discomfort.

That said, many of our users have not been bothered by this sensation, as Christine notes: “You quickly get used to the spikes; they’re not painful, just a bit uncomfortable at first, which disappears after a few minutes.” Overall, there’s no need to be a seasoned practitioner to feel comfortable on your acupressure mat! In fact, some people who were initially hesitant have ended up falling asleep on the mat due to the calming effect of the spikes on their skin (an experience we’ve had in our office…).

Some Exercises to Promote Relaxation

There are many breathing and meditation exercises that can help release tension and enhance the benefits of your practice. Here are two to start with (you’ll find more exercises in the accompanying booklet provided with each of our acupressure mats):

Breathing Exercise

  • Close your eyes and inhale deeply, expanding your belly for a count of 3.
  • Hold the air in for a count of 3.
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6, allowing your belly to contract.
  • Repeat this process for 4 more breaths, counting each moment in your head.

Meditation Exercise

  • Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
  • As thoughts arise, let them pass without dwelling on them.
  • Do not try to control or eliminate these thoughts. Simply observe them.
  • Continue this practice for as long as you like, maintaining calm, deep abdominal breathing. If needed, place your hands on your belly to become more aware of your breath.

4. When to Use Your Acupressure Mat

We conducted a comprehensive survey to learn more about the use of acupressure mats. This study was conducted with 325 people using the Climsom Zen acupressure mat. The results exceeded our expectations, with a satisfaction rate of 97%, as indicated by this survey data.

75% of respondents use the acupressure mat primarily in the evening. This time of day is seen as the most opportune for self-care and releasing the day’s accumulated tension. This is not surprising, considering that we spend an average of 7 hours a day sitting, highlighting the importance of the acupressure mat in maintaining good blood circulation.

While evening use is recommended for sleep issues or after a stressful day, morning use is suggested for those feeling low on energy.

Additionally, some people use the mat before or after exercise sessions. A few have become so fond of it that they incorporate a session both in the morning and evening. There are no strict rules—use the mat according to your personal needs and availability.

Short on Time?

Think you don’t have time? The advantage of the acupressure mat is that it can be used quickly and easily. Why not unfold it vertically on your couch and sit on it? Just be sure to keep your back straight and place a cushion under your lower back. This way, you can enjoy your favorite TV show or movie while benefiting from the mat’s effects! Alternatively, you can lay the acupressure mat under your legs on the bed while reading a good book or listening to your favorite music. It’s easy, we promise!

Favorite music + acupressure session = ultimate relaxation!

5. How Long Should I Use My Acupressure Mat?

More than half of users practice on the acupressure mat for up to 30 minutes per session. If you’re a beginner, you can start with about 10 minutes to get used to the mat and then gradually increase the duration of your sessions.

6. How Often Should I Use My Acupressure Mat?

The acupressure mat can be used regularly for prevention or occasionally based on pain or discomfort. Nearly half of users practice several times a week. Others use it daily, while some do so once a week. There are no strict rules—follow your preferences and listen to your body and its needs!
